Kimi Raikkonen insists that he could not care less whether he holds on to his third place in the Formula 1 drivers’ championship or not.
The Finn is too far adrift of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso to move up the standings, but he could lose his current third spot to Lewis Hamilton at the season finale in Brazil.
His Lotus bosses are eager for him to end up as best of the rest behind the title contenders, but Raikkonen says the final result will mean nothing to him.
“I don’t care if I am second, fourth, or 10th,” he said. “We are here to try to win, and it really doesn’t give me anything if I am third or fourth.”
Raikkonen has previously half-joked that he would actually prefer to finish fourth because that would mean he could avoid going to the end of season FIA prizegiving ceremony.
When asked in Brazil if he would be disappointed if he had to travel to Istanbul for the awards ceremony next month, he said: “I don’t care if I have to go. But for me it doesn’t really give me anything.
“I am here to try to win, and if I finish third or fourth it doesn’t matter. If you ask someone after five years in F1 and who was second or third, it would be the same.
“It makes no difference. It looks maybe better on paper but in reality it doesn’t mean anything.”
