With a rapidly drying track adding to the slowly fading daylight here at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Free Practice 1 proved something of a venture into the unknown as Kimi and Romain ran through an intensive schedule of data collection during the opening session of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend.
Summary:
A heavy downpour in the hours building up to Free Practice 1 made for tricky and changeable track conditions at the Marina Bay Street Circuit as the drivers took to the Singapore streets for the opening session of the weekend.
Completing install laps on the blue marked full wet Pirelli tyres, first stints on the green marked intermediates and second runs on the yellow marked soft compound slick rubber, Kimi and Romain took the opportunity to bed themselves in for whatever conditions may arrive throughout the weekend.
No sooner had the engineers deemed the circuit to be ready for slicks than the Finn emerged from his garage; gradually building up the pace until his E20 made a fleeting appearance at the top of the time sheets following consecutive fastest laps.
A productive second half of the session saw both drivers completing longer runs as part of the team’s regular free practice format; preparations for Sunday’s race as usual being the priority.
A few tense moments for Romain came in the form of some kerb hopping through the Singapore Sling chicane and a trip down the escape road at T14 as an otherwise smooth and productive session drew to a close with both E20s placing in the midfield.
