Lotus Boss: Kimi is Kimi and it will be difficult to change the way he lives

Source: reuters.com

Kimi Raikkonen’s Lotus team have ruled out reining in the 2007 Formula One world champion after the Finn crashed and hurt his wrist while competing in a snowmobile race at the weekend.

Memories of Robert Kubica’s near-fatal rally accident last February are still raw at the former Renault outfit, with the Pole yet to get back in the cockpit after missing the entire 2011 season.

However Lotus Group CEO Dany Bahar, whose Malaysian-owned sportscar company are now the renamed team’s title sponsors, made clear on Monday that racing drivers could never be wrapped in cotton wool.

“It is part of our job to do things that are risky, we do it commercially and corporately, Kimi does it in his own life,” he told reporters at a lunch.

“I like these characters. It’s unfortunate if he hurts himself but it’s part of life.

“Kimi is Kimi and it will be difficult to change the way he lives,” added Bahar.

“It’s not something we are focused on from a group perspective, saying: ‘This is Kimi now you have to do everything to protect him from going out of his own house’. It doesn’t work.”

Lotus said at the weekend that Raikkonen, a champion with Ferrari and now making his F1 comeback after two seasons in rallying, had a sore wrist after the spill in Austria but it was “nothing to worry about”.

I’m sooo happy you are back! I enjoyed your posts tremendously and was sad to see it gone, as well as Kimi from F1. Now I cannot wait for the season to start!!

    Hello Evenstar and others again!

It has been quite a while, but now Kimi is back. To be honest, I was pretty sure, that Kimi will come back. Kimi Räikkönen is one of the most fastest F1 drivers ever. May be the fastest. However, I have to say, that quite soon after Kimi started his WRC career, I and many others could see, that he will not be successful in rallying.

As a Finnish guy, I have always watched rallying and know all Finnish rally drivers: Hirvonen, Latvala, Grönholm, Kankkunen, Mäkinen (Tommi), Salonen, Alen, Vatanen, Mikkola etc… It has been quite clear, that it is not possible for Kimi, to be at the same level. At least it would take him years and probably even then, it would not be successful. Kimi’s place is in F1, there he belongs to.

And then to Evenstar. It has been great, that you are having this site again updated. Hopefully I can give you some tips from Finnish media.

Thanks, it’s good to see you too Pekka! I agree with you about rally… It requires a long-term commitment and the skills to go with it. I think Kimi did a reasonable job though considering his racing history. But even I couldn’t bear to watch his rallying close enough and see him struggling, I missed him so much in F1 because I also believe he is the fastest ever and that’s where his talent belongs! lol

We will definately appreciate your contribution from the land of the Iceman again, looking forward to it.
