Walker Tips Kubica, Slates Kimi

From Autosport.com

Murray Walker has tipped Robert Kubica to win the 2009 Formula One World Championship.

Speaking at the Autosport International Show today, the legendary
commentator said the changes to the regulations next season could
change the order at the front and expects Kubica and BMW to shine
through.

"Nobody has got the faintest idea what’s going to be happening in
2009," Walker said on the Autosport Central Stage. "They’ve thrown all
the balls up in the air, we’ve got KERS, we’ve got slick tyres – thank
God – all sorts of different things happening next year. It’s going to
be very different.

"Ask me who will win the championship this year," he added. "Robert Kubica in the BMW.

"They’re a mighty switched on organisation, BMW, they make cracking
road cars and I am full of admiration and respect for what they’ve
done. And they will get better."

He also expects Renault to be able to challenge for victories on a
regular basis this year following their renaissance with Fernando
Alonso in 2008.

"They got it wrong by not stretching the rules as much as some of
the other teams may have done in the engine department last year, but
now that’s being put right," Walker said.

"I think Renault are going to be a big threat, particularly with
Fernando Alonso at the wheel because he has still got something to
prove."

Walker criticised outgoing world champion Kimi Raikkonen for not finding a way to get the best out of the F2008.

"He was on a roll after 2007 when he was world champion in his first
year with a new team," said Walker. "The conventional wisdom is that
Raikkonen lost the championship because he couldn’t handle the
understeering characteristic of the Ferrari, but that’s his job.

"It’s his job to master it and he’s paid £20 million a year or
something like that. Well, I’m very sorry for him, but it is his job
and he didn’t come up to snuff. (Felipe) Massa grasped the opportunity
and blew him away, all credit to him."

Walker will be featured part of the BBC’s F1 coverage this year, with his own blog. Speaking of the crazy ex-F1 commentator, check out Kimi’s first every qualifying lap in F1 in which he caught Walker’s attention and to remind those about Kimi’s blistering speed – too fast for the cameras as Martin Brundle put it. Brundle leaves ITV to join the BBC too, and will be commentating on the coverage, and here’s the latest interview with him on his predictions of 2009.Let’s keep our fingers crossed that both Kubica and Kimi have a stronger season all the way through. Other news regarding Ferrari’s launch follows:

Ferrari Move Car Launch To Mugello

Ferrari have been forced to move the location of the launch of their
new car next week, due to the winter weather conditions in Italy.

The team’s 2009 challenger had been due to be unveiled in Fiorano on
Monday morning, but due to conditions at Ferrari’s test track the
launch will now take place at Mugello.

Ferrari will be the first team to unveil their 2009 car, with Toyota
and McLaren also due to pull the wraps of their machines later in the
week.

I don’t agree with Walker. I just can’t imagine Renault building and adjusting their car to mismatch Alonso’s driving style. Same goes for McLaren and Hamilton. What Murray said seems to be a sane, valid point of view, but it’s not. Unlike a racing car, one’s driving style isn’t something that changes every year. Kimi’s driving style was developed through all his career, and finally brought him what he deserved – the championship. Why should he attempt to change it? And, correct me if I’m wrong, Massa never ‘blew Kimi away’. If you remember Kimi’s 2003-2006 and his performance agaist teammates – that was ‘blow away’. Felipe’s speed was neither astounding, nor consistent.

Hi!I completely agree with you, as we’ve looked at Kimi closely for years and already have discussed what happened in 2008 many times enough here. I get irritated by these kinds of comments by F1 people. But keep your views coming guys! 🙂

Murray Walker is famous for only getting on thing right! RETIREMENT. Then he went and changed his mind.Kimi is one of the greats, and like many other greats his moving or not moving teams has robbed him of a tittle or two.We are very lucky that last season was really good, close and vigourously and fairly fought by the two best drivers of their time.Only chance decided who would get the crown, no disrespect in coming that close, just no roses either, but a superb effort by all involved. Great hopes for next year, and the depth of skills at Ferrari and McLaren will keep them competitive. Who knows who it might be?
