Kimi Raikkonen: I touched the inside kerb. I just bounced off and hit the wall.

Q. Was it a question of losing concentration?

KR: No. I wanted to stay close in places to the Toyota
because there were only two places that I could get very close and have
any chance if he made a small mistake. That was one – before the back
straight I needed to get very close and unfortunately I touched the
kerb slightly too much and just when you hit that quite hard you can’t
turn too much and I couldn’t turn any more so I just went a bit wide
and hit the wall. Not the tyre wall, but the plastic blocks and I took
the wheel off.

Q. Is this the end for your championship hopes?

KR: It was a pretty small chance anyhow. I’m not sad for my
fifth place but I’m sorry for the team to lose those points. But for
sure we’ll try to do better next race.

Q. How did the rest of the race go?

KR: At the beginning of the race there were a couple of
difficult laps but then the car was very good. Then we got the safety
car and we had to stop behind Felipe and lost a lot of time. We tried
to come back and we were able to get to fifth place and I wanted to go
further but we got nothing in the end. I’m not sad for my fifth place,
losing that for this error, but for sure for the team it would have
been nice to get those points for them.

Q. What happened in Felipe’s pitstop?

KR: I don’t know. I didn’t even look. I just tried to get
close to him and then he left and the fuel rig was still connected. I
don’t really know what happened, probably the people who were watching
on TV got better views.

Q. Your last victory was in Spain. What are your feelings on going for so long without a win?

KR: It doesn’t change anything. I was in a position to try to
win, but when the safety car came out the chance was pretty much gone.
We’ve been close a few times but quite often we’ve been a bit unlucky
so we try next race again. I haven’t given up. We want to have some
good races. We have not had the season we wanted but we have a good
spirit. Of course this is not a nice day but I’ve seen enough in
Formula One and we still have a good car and we should still be able to
win some races this year.

Q. Is it a problem to race at a track on which safety cars are so likely?

KR: The safety car rule is very difficult for the people that
is in the first 10 because more or less the safety car seems to come
always in an area where we need to pit in. Then you really get the
penalty or you are lucky because you stopped before the safety car. You
lose a lot of places when you have to stop behind the safety car. It’s
a difficult rule – sometimes it’s against you, sometimes it helps you
but it’s nothing to do with the circuits. It’s the rule with the safety
car.

Q. Is the car now more to your liking?

KR: The car is usually pretty good in the race, but we still
have some work to do to get exactly what we want for one lap. It’s
definitely been better since we changed back to the parts that we
performed well with when we used them in a couple of races this year
but on one lap it’s still not what we want. We were in a good position
today but when the safety car came out it was all gone.

Q. When the safety car came out and you were pitting behind Massa, did you consider staying out for another lap?

KR: I think it wouldn’t have made much difference to me. It’s
best to come in with everyone else and double fuel. You always lose out
when you are the second car.

Q. Was the crash caused by a problem of the track?

KR: There is that one chicane where we talk about the kerbs
that are very high and if you touch the kerb too much it bounces the
whole car in the air. There’s nothing you can do and the wall is pretty
close. I tried to turn and slow down but it just took the wheel off.
Not too hard, but it was just enough to take the wheel off.

Q. Lewis Hamilton has seven more points than Felipe. How important will your role be in the next three races.

KR: I know what the team wants – they want to win the world
championship. We will see what happens. I’m trying to win races too and
we will see what happens. I’m out of the championship anyhow.

In other news, Ferrari have said they’ll look into the pitstop problem and you can read an interesting Stefano Domenicali interview and also one with the man who lost it all today, Felipe Massa. Here’s another shot of Kimi near his car, with 5 laps to go. As much as it saddened the poster to share them, they’re insightful photos of Kimi and say a lot about his season 2008.

I don’t know what happen to Ferrari recently. It seems the race is not
pointing to the team since the Spain although Massa won marginally. It
looks like you are under pressure to push your point up after several
zero returns but that will be a big lost which you lost your
concentration in nanosecond under attack or chasing that cause the mistake under high speed.
There are a lot of physical problems from the race so as the car under
rain. You have done well in the race although not started from the front
row. To me, I will say the team, including the crews really have to
concentrate on the works of the team but not the other. You are
competing with yourself, not Massa, Lewis, Robert or other. I don’t
know how much fuel you have after the pit-lane was open under safety
car. Nonetheless, it seems that Ferraris are coming to the pit together
with a train of cars that will be a lost strategy. It just simply
putting the only 2 eggs in one basket. The racing strategies are more depend on the racing situation. 2 stops maybe applicable on yesterday race but it could be a delayed stop…or……Goodluck KIMI, I will be watching every single of your race. Some more to go this year but many to go in the future. All the best!

Kimi is every time the best, the driver that, with hamilton, tries always to do the best possible and never give up.
people say that he makes some big mistakes, but I don’t see them so tremendous cos I know, cos I see races, that every thing that happens is for trying the best in every race.
Kimi is a great driver and as the great driver that he is-and we all know it!- he deserve all the respect from media.
a respect that he has not at the moment.
I’m frightened every day more thinking about how people can be bad. in races as in our life, ther’e’s too much freedom in be cruel with anyone at the minumun trouble.

keep flying Kimi, I’m with you by heart

    Hello all!
it was definately a bad week end, we could have good hopes and  we saw the flying man again during the race. But we knew that : the win or nothing, and unfortunately it was nothing again…
bad week end, i had a problem with my computer too, so no possibility to share my feelings with you all. i missed you!
Saturday, i didn’t want to see the qualif, i had a bad presentiment, but i finally watched the qualif later on saturday evening, not so badly but my bad presentiment was always there… and no computer to speak with all you. Rrrrrrrrrrrrr
I watched the race and as usual couldn’t stay on my seat, i was so proud to see him flying, so fast, but then with the SC, i knew it was over, even worse when i saw him pitting just behind Massa, what a stupid idea! I was really angry!
Then, he did his job, i knew he could do it, but i knew yet too that the end wouldn’t be happy, he said it " i’m fighting for the win" and in 5th place, i knew he would fight harder and can’t help myself to see the worst before it comes. and that happened…
Very sad end, i keep saying myself today "i can’t believe it". All different feelings crossed in my head : anger,  disapointment, sadness, how breaking heart to see our poor Kimi alone and sad, waiting for a ride, i would like to be near him to comfort him, telling him he’s not alone, we still are here for him and that tomorrow, things will be better. A bit stupid, i know, he’s the first to turn the page.
It’s definately not his year, like all the even number years, ( you noticed that!!!!?!),
my hope have gone too, but not my support! i just wish for better days as always… but it’s so hard to cannot help him! Nothing to do…
You’re as usual right Saima, we must laugh rather than cry, thank you for your sweetie words and good spirit!
now, it’s ok , we can just hope that our Kimi will have fun during the last races but not with bad results, i would say "please"!
Hope for win nevertheless and fastest laps again, it seems that is just what he can do for this year,
but no matter, that’s better than nothing, he can still show he’s the fastest driver in the world,

KEEP FLYING KIMI ! KEEP FLYING EVENSTAR !

I, for one, always maintain that as long as there’s a mathematical chance to win the Championship, we should keep the hope, but honestly, it’s time to be realistic now, as Kimi’s admitted that he’s out of the championship anyhow. So, we look forward to next year. The exciting thing about this season is the varied number of unexpected winners, and not the boring dominance of merely one driver.
If any, my complaint is the stress that Kimi’s put me under as a fan ! I feel I’ve had a tougher season being a Kimi supporter compared to Kimi the driver! I went to see the doctor today for an ailment I’ve had for a couple of weeks now and the doc asked if I’ve been under any stress lately. I can’t think of any except those that I experience during each race weekend ! Ha ! HA! So, I say to Kimi, you MUST WIN the remaining 3 races! No pressure, but it will certainly help me recover a lot quicker ! GO KIMI!!!!!

Hey Trixie, hope you feel better soon! Ahh, those pics are really heartbreaking!!! Maybe we´re reading too much into them and he´s just waiting for his ride, and I know he´s the Iceman and all, but it´s the first time I´ve seen this expression on his face, complete desolation. I wanted to cry when I first saw them. But we cannot forget that no matter how great the disappointment, these are racing drivers, and they´re used to these kinds of situations, even more Kimi, having had such crappy years at McLaren….but still, it´s sad, just sad.All I know is that the championship is over, but I still love my Kimster, maybe more now, he´s proven over and over again he´s the fastest and the best, even with a car that doesn´t suit his driving style; and I will keep supporting him no matter what. And I will say it again, I just want him to have fun in these three remaining races, and at least to win one, to end the year on a happy note and not with a bitter taste in our mouths.KEEP FLYING MY DEAR KIMI – KEEP FLYING EVENSTAR!!!.P.S to Marilyne: You´ve said it all along about the even/uneven years, I´m starting to believe it!

Tks for your well wishes, Sol I II III. I can’t wait to feel 100% again, and for Kimi to blitz them all in the last 3 races.
I also agree with Marilyne… I refer to Kimi as the ODD (year) MAN when I posted my comment on 15/9.  Somehow he’s never performed as well in the Even numbered years! Isn’t that ODD??!
Fortunately for Kimi, he’s always managed to take the setbacks in his stride and soldiers on regardless – mark of a real champion!
