Kimi claims the first ever DHL Fastest Lap Award for 2007*
* Raikkonen and Massa both set six fastest laps and two second-fastest
laps during the season. Raikkonen takes the Award by virtue of setting
three third-fastest laps to Massa’s two.
"In Sao Paulo, Räikkönen had fun driving fast, notching up fastest time number six of the season on lap 66. At this point, he already had the championship in the bag and could have eased up. According to his own account, that’s what he did. "We could have gone much faster," he said. "If we’d wanted to, we could have shaved another second off our lap times."
But having a fast car wasn’t what won the trophy. "Ferrari put a superior car at Kimi’s disposal, but even then, it’s up to the driver to put in a good performance," stressed Christian Danner. "He is a worthy champion. It always means a lot to know you’re the fastest man on the track." And true racers always want to be the fastest, which means clocking the fastest lap time."
Evenstar ~ Wow, that’s another treat for the fastest driver out there, well done Kimi! Pity that they didn’t have an award for the 2005 season where he held 10 fastest laps. But nonetheless, it’s great that being the fastest is also being rewarded in Formula One!
Kimi & Felipe reflect on 2007
From Formula1.com
As harsh as it is, with team mates over the course of a season there will always be a winner and a loser. At Ferrari, it was undoubtedly new driver Kimi Raikkonen who took the honours.
Despite being 17 points down on title leader Lewis Hamilton with two races left to run, a calm and collected Raikkonen still managed to clinch his first drivers’ crown. Incumbent driver Felipe Massa, meanwhile, suffered more than his fair share of reliability issues and eventually finished fourth in the championship, with three race victories to his name.
Having had time to reflect on their 2007 campaigns, we asked Ferrari’s finest to look back on the season’s high and lows…
Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari
Championship position: 1st (110 points)
Six wins, 3 pole positions, 6 fastest laps
“It was an incredible year for me and what else could one expect given that I became world champion! We fought all the way down to the last kilometre, but in the end we got it because we never gave up, even when we were 26 points down halfway through the season or 17 with two races to go. It was a very tough season because we were up against some very determined competitors, but we also had a very strong will to win. At Ferrari, I have found a fantastic group of people, who did everything they could to put me at my ease and to give me the possibility of winning.
“After a difficult year like 2006, I rediscovered the joy of being in Formula One. Once again I have fallen in love with this sport. I have heard a lot of people say a championship changes your life, but I don’t think that will be the case for me, because I have always stayed the same as ever, year after year. What I like is being with the people I love, spending time with my closest friends who don’t care whether I am world champion or not. And then, I like racing and for that there is Ferrari.”
Felipe Massa, Ferrari
Championship position: 4th (94 points)
Three wins, 6 poles positions, 6 fastest laps
“2007 was a very good year and a very exciting one. I fought almost to the very last race for the world title and the only reason I wasn’t in the running for the title by the time we got to Interlagos is because we had too many reliability problems during the year. Kimi and I brought both titles back to Maranello at the end of a really tough confrontation with very strong opponents. For my part, I won three races and took six pole positions and the same number of race fastest laps, improving on my points score from last year. There were some extraordinary moments, like the wins in Sakhir, Barcelona and Istanbul, as well as the pole in Interlagos in front of my home crowd, but even nicer was the joy of having played a decisive role in the success of the team.
“We have shown that, even if some of the important people are no longer in the team, starting with Michael Schumacher, Ferrari is still at the top of Formula One. I have my second family at Maranello and I was delighted to be able to announce just before my home race that I have extended my agreement that binds me to the Scuderia to the end of 2010 – that means a lot more time to enjoy together!”
