Raikkonen escapes large accident

Update = It seems the Ferrari mechanics are trying to discover how exactly the brakes failed: Image 1 Image 2
However, Kimi will be using the T-car with the same engine.

tur30.jpg image by SaimaAzamKimi Raikkonen has walked away from a heavy crash during Saturday morning’s practice session at Monza. Raikkonen was on his fourth lap of the morning when his Ferrari snapped
right under braking for the Ascari chicane. It glanced the wall before
hitting the tyre barriers at high speed, head on.

The car jerkedtur32.jpg image by SaimaAzam violently to the right. It hit the
concrete barrier and slid at high speed along a strip of grass that lay
between the gravel trap and the barrier before crashing heavily into
the tyre wall.

Raikkonen was able to exit the car immediately, however the session
was red-flagged while the remains of the car were retrieved and the
tyrewall repaired.

tur33.jpg image by SaimaAzamChanges had been made to the circuit in an effort to improve safety
in preparation for this year’s race, with the gravel run-off at the
second chicane having been replaced by asphalt. However some drivers
had highlighted other sections of
the track as needing attention in the
future, including the spot where Raikkonen crashed.

"Parabolica and Ascari are still on the edge," Mark Webber told
journalists on Friday. "You’re still going to go in hard if you have a
failure."

Thanks to God that Kimi is unhurt in this horrible accident, his first main crash after Nurburgring 2005. I hope he will be okay for qualifying. As long as he is feeling okay, I am not worried. Saftey comes first in Formula One.

The pictures with Luca Di Montezemolo were taken before the accident, strangely. It seems funny, if not just odd, that Kimi has a big crash afterwards. I hope there’s no sabotaging going on!!!!

krspits.jpg picture by SaimaAzamKimi missed a lot of track time in the second session due to some hydraulic problems after completing just five
laps. He managed to get back on track and do seven laps when the session was nearly finished.

Friday quotes

"The first session went well, but in the second one I lost a lot of
time with a hydraulic problem and I only
managed to do one run of laps
on new tyres in the final moments," said Raikkonen.

"We therefore don’t have much of a reference point on where we
actually are, on top
ita7s.jpg image by SaimaAzam of the fact that as usual there are the unknown
factors linked to the fuel loads and tyres used by the other teams
during the practice.

"The balance of the car is not bad, but we definitely have work to
do to improve the performance, especially for qualifying, where our
rivals are particularly competitive. But our race pace should be good.

"Monza is Ferrari’s home race and I will be doing my best to give the team and all its fans something to be happy about."

Kimi started off his first Italian GP weekend as a Ferrari driver perfectly, leading a Ferrari 1-2 in the first practise session. The McLarens’ are still considerably close to their rivals, with the rest of the grid being over a whole second slower. McLaren and Ferrari are in a class of their own, so I hope we’ll see some good racing on Sunday!
