The Monaco Grand Prix

Enjoy the sunshine Kimi

Sunday, Race day

It was so far so good in Monaco, and still is for Kimi as his engine failed behind Alonso’s tail more than half way through the race, and the Iceman is currently enjoying the sunshine in his boat in the Marina, enjoying a few drinks with his closest friends.

Kimi’s race was very well controlled, he overtook Mark Webber in an unusual spot in a fantastic manouvre and he kept on Alonso’s tail more or less throughout the whole race up until his car gave it away. Mark Webber also suffered an engine problem, and left the car in rage, unlike Kimi, who walked all the way around the track in calmness, more of a nice stroll through Monaco on a beautiful sunday afternoon. Juan Pablo is in second place behind Alonso, but the traffic today has affected any close run up to the race leader. Michael Schumacher not suprisingly is in 6th place, he made a good start passing the Midlands and the Super Aguris.

And the winner is, Alonso, Juan Pablo Montoya in Second place and amazingly great Briton David Coulthard in Third!!!!

Saturday Qualifying

The run up to the qualifying sessions today became more and more anticipated as for all 22 cars would be on track for session one. Even more so for Kimi fans, the Iceman and his McLaren were on pace throughout the whole afternoon! Finally.

There was a minor accident for Massa in his Ferrari during session one, which meant he had no qualifying time and it also meant Michael Schumacher and a few others were penalised as the red flag waved. Kimi and Juan Pablo however, managed to put in fast times prior to the accident, therefore all went well as far as McLaren were concerned. Juan Pablo used the new front wing McLaren had developed whereas Kimi is happy with his current front wing. This is no sign of preferation of driver in car development, but simply what the drivers feel comfortable and confident with. In fact, it was Kimi who set the fastest time just after Massa’s little bump into the barrier. So Star Kimi performing as great as ever. Alonso could manage only second quickest but still kept his performance up.

Session two was underway after a considerably decent and traffic free session one for the drivers. Kimi again set the fastest time with both Renaults behind, and the flying Finn’s time almost matched his pole time last year. Jenson Button was the driver struggling the most this afternoon and ended up being knocked out of the session, whereas his teammate Barrichello outqualified him for the 3rd time consecutively this season! So things are going into reverse mode in Honda. The main progress seen this weekend at Monaco has to be from the McLarens, as both drivers seem very comfortable and their cars performing better and better.

Session three is where it got down and dirty, quite literally as Michael Schumacher parked his car in the last turn just after setting the fastest time. Apparantly he locked his wheel, during his second attempt to go faster, and let his car sit outside La Rascasse. With Kimi on a blistering lap, he was troubled with Nico Rosberg infront and missed out on going fastest which meant 4th fastest. Having dominated all of the afternoon, this shouldn’t affect the potential he carries into the race tomorrow. But the main driver to be caught out by Michaels controversial production, was Fernando Alonso who was also going fastest in the first two sectors. With the yellow flag waving, Schumacher currently seems to have secured pole position. Alonso had to settle for 2nd position and suprisingly Mark Webber in his Williams Cosworth went 3rd fastest.

The comedy of this all were the bemused faces in the pit lane, however Flavio Briatore was more than convinced that this was the typical dirty tactics of Ferrari. Pat Symonds ran off crying to the race stewards while everyone else remained pissed off basically. LOL. This is what Martin Whitmarsh said about Michael’s show
"
“I think the best comment I’ve heard on it since it happened was Kimi’s
own view that in fact he should’ve taken one hand off the steering
wheel, covered the camera with one hand, and done it with the other…”
"

Well, there you go. It is best to qualify on pole in Monaco, do whatever it takes to get pole. But be prepared from an assault from behind, were faster and better cars are breathing down on your neck!

UPDATE: MICHAEL SCHUMACHER HAS BEEN PENALISED WITH STARTING THE RACE TOMORROW AT THE VERY BACK END OF THE GRID.

Keep Flying Kimi!!!
Its just got started!!!

Mika urges Kimi to stay at McLarenLaughing

Double world champion Mika Hakkinen reckons his compatriot Kimi
Raikkonen should stay where he is if he wants to achieve lasting
success.

The 38-year-old long-term Mercedes driver, who won both his world
championships in a McLaren, says that Raikkonen should focus fixing the
problems within his team rather than look for a better option.

“Personally I believe Kimi should continue with McLaren-Mercedes,” the Mercedes DTM star told Autosport magazine.
"I think he should work closely with the team and focus on the problems and try to make things better.
Maybe it doesn’t come for the next race, or the race after, or
even this year, but you have to look long-term at what is the best.”

Raikkonen has been linked to drive with Ferrari in 2007, with some
paddock pundits believing that a deal may have already been done.

But Hakkinen, who only drove for two teams in his F1 career – Lotus
(1991-’92) and McLaren (’93-’01), warned that switching teams could
hurt Raikkonen’s chances of leaving a legacy in the sport.

“If you start jumping left, right and centre, suddenly you realise 10 years have gone by,” he said.
“It’s a tough one, of course. It’s difficult for a young driver to make a decision.
The question is: do you want to win it 10 times or do you want to win it once.”

Kimi is talking up his chances for this weekend:

After winning the race know as the Jewel in the Crown last year, Kimi’s hopes of capturing the Crown of the Championship failed. But nonetheless, it was a superb performance by Kimi and this would be the perfect boost McLaren need, and who better than the man Raikkonen himself to do it.

Raikkonen said:"Monte
Carlo is a completely different challenge to the Barcelona track and I
think we will be pushing hard for victory. The barriers are so close
and you need to be precise so the handling of the car and the
mechanical grip are more important than other areas, such as ‘aero’
efficiency."

Thursday Practise information
Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikkonen
finished today’s second free practice in third and sixth positions
with fastest lap times of 1:16.138 and 1:16.707 on the
street circuit of Monaco. So far Juan Pablo is the one having a more brighter start to the weekend, being faster than Kimi and having no problems.

Kimi came out the tunnel, with smoke trailing behind him during the first practise. It was a heat shield on his car which caught fire and damaged the wire looming which made the engine switch off. But the McLaren team were able to make amends and get Kimi back out on track to set his time for the day. Usually McLaren have downplayed going out in the first two practise sessions, but ironically this time they made use of it and were able to benefit from a problem occuring today, rather than during qualifying tomorrow afternoon.

So, though these little defects should not be occuring, they shouldnt be affecting Kimi’s motivation for a strong result this weekend.
