Ferrari have become the first team to unveil their 2009 car, ahead of the first run of their F60 at Mugello in Italy on Monday.

The car has been named as a way of celebrating the fact that Ferrari
are the only team to have competed in each of the 60 years of the
Formula One world championship.

Due to the radical change in F1 regulations this year, the look of
the new car is dominated by the wide front wing and narrow rear wing –
with the central part of the F60 featuring a highly-sculpted ‘coke
bottle’ rear-end from behind the sidepods.

The new car features Ferrari’s Kinetic Energy Recovery System
(KERS), which has been developed in conjunction with electronics
supplier Magneti Marelli. It is mounted on the engine – although the
team has not yet confirmed whether the device will be used for the
first race.

"As you can see the car is not an evolution of last year’s car," said technical director Aldo Costa.

"It’s a completely new car, starting from a white piece of paper.
Fundamentally the biggest changes come from the new rules from an
aerodynamic point of view and the introduction of new technology, which
is the KERS system.

"Because of that we had to start work pretty early and to review the
main concept of the car, so it was a very very intense and long job."

The F60 features longditudinally-mounted carbon fibre-cased gearbox and has a new Brembo designed braking system.
Felipe Massa is scheduled to test the car for the first time later
today at Mugello, with initial shakedowns having been switched from
Fiorano because of freezing temperatures at Ferrari’s test track
.

Kimi Raikkonen: "Last year was not exactly what I wanted but that is in the past now
and we will try again this year," said Raikkonen. "Of course it is a
big question mark how good the car will be because the rules have
changed a lot.

"But we are very confident that the car should be very good and we
will see in the next few weeks how good it is against the others. But for sure we’ll try to win the world championships, but we’ll see how it is and we’ll go from there."

"It looks different because of the new regulations, but after
looking at it for a little while you get used to it," he said. "It
looks different but it looks very good. I’m looking forward to see it
run and see how it goes."

F60 Makes Track Debut at Mugello
The F60 made its track debut on Monday at the Mugello circuit following its unveiling this morning.
Brazilian Felipe Massa took to the track at 10:35 to complete the first installation lap with the new car.

He then returned to action at 10:55 to complete another full lap.
The Brazilian said he was "happy and excited to take the Ferrari out
for its first ride."

Ferrari have five tests scheduled before the season-opening race.
The Italian squad will be in action at Portimao, Bahrain, Jerez and
Barcelona.

Stefano Domenicali: "…2009 will be a peculiar type of season, backed up with political
and sporting events, and our aim is to rank among the first ones. We
have two drivers who are highly motivated and this says it all.

"Kimi and Felipe are with us to inaugurate the
new car because it is a completely new project. We have done the first
tests and are analysing all the new aspects of the new car with a very
positive approach, and we are approaching a new season that will be
stimulating from all points of views."

"I believe that the drivers will have more input," he explained. "So
if our systems are 100 percent effective, then we will give the
possibility for our drivers to have a performance delta that is much
larger (than before).

"They will decide when to use KERS. They will have new tyres, and at
best we have an engine with a different maximum rpm, so we will have to
decide how to cope with it.

"We are also talking about a new wing and I guess drivers will have
to become familiar with this new wing that has new dimensions, so they
will have to be more careful. The drivers have a season in front of
them when they will certainly play a more vital role."

Why does the FIA entry list say that kimi will have the number 3? He should take the n. 4, shouldn’t he?

Uuhhmmm..contrary to majority opinions here, dare I say I think the newly unveiled Ferrari looks kinda weird and stunted?? When I first saw it, for some reason the image of a lawn mower crossed my mind, and having just viewed the Launch photos here, it now reminds me of a glamourised kart. I don’t know…it looked kinda squashed up the back like it’s been thru a rear compactor. But having said that, as long as it is quick, nimble & reliable to suit Kimi’s driving style in his bid for his 2nd World Driver’s Championship title campaign for 2009, it can look like a chariot for all I care, provided it is the best car on the track. And correct me if I’m wrong…is Kimi’s No. 3 due to the fact that he was 2007 WDC ? Wasn’t Sebastian Bourdais’ car the no. 1 car of Torro Rosso compared to Vettel’s even though Bourdais was a "rookie" in 2008? Bourdais was 5 times Indy Champion.

Hey Trixie! I agree with you, as long as the car is fast and reliable, and suits Kimi´s driving style, I don´t care what it looks like. And I had the same doubts as you did regarding the number 3, on the official forum someone explained that the team decides who gets the higher/lower number, and I do think that Kimi being WDC already also played a part in that decision….so Kimi has the upper hand over Massa.Keep flying Kimi!!!

@Alessandra: Hi! Well the car numbering system is based on the constructor’s championship, but whoever is the world champion is who begins the order of numbers. Hamilton is the champion, so he carries No.1 and therefore his teammate carries No.2. The rest of the teams/drivers can choose which of the two numbers their drivers have on the car.About the F60, I noticed something only late last night. The rear tyres are bigger/wider than the front. I assume all the cars will have this? It’s just interesting, it definately resembles the older F1 cars now where the rear tyres were much wider. The side profile looks pretty much the same as before, but it’s just the head-on shot above where it looks odd. I do think the car looked good, both on display and on the track. But I’m still waiting for Melbourne and anything else prior to that doesn’t make up my mind…

News just in from various sources in Italy. Poltergeistes, a member on Autosport.com’s forum, said: "sorry just to confirm it, the reporters that are in mugello confirmed with ferrari, naturally felipes number will be number 3, the car that was put together n set for him to test today had the number 3, apparently fia had the wrong information sent out (again), they have confirmed all the new scuderia merchandise it’s massa 3 and raikkonen 4."and TaniaS said on Italian tv that: "An italian journalist said that Ferrari chose #3 for Massa and #4 for Raikkonen. But FIA gave the number following the fact that Kimi is an ex world champion. Now Ferrari will see if it’s the case to ask for a change or not."So it seems it was a mistake by the FIA afterall.

Oh noes!!! I was so excited about Kimi having number 3 on his car! Is this for sure? I mean would the FIA screw up like this? Well they have in the past….I´ll wait for the confirmation though….but Tania is a very good source, dunno :s:(

It doesn’t really matter does it guys? After all a number is a number nowadays, only the number 1 really means anything. Besides to be fair, Massa did finish higher in the points than Kimi so perhaps that is the reason they (Ferrari) gave him No. 3?

I know, I know, it´s only a number, but still….I was upbeat about that….oh well, he´ll win races and championships with any number on his car!:p
