RTL Interview with Kimi, France 2008

Kimi on childhood, family and kids

This interview video was taken during the French GP weekend by German channel RTL. Kimi talks about family, having kids (yes girls, he’s gonna have his own children one day! A baby Kimi, awwww!) and how racing has only made him wiser but unchanged as a person. It’s covered in German translation but thankfully Essi wrote down an English translation for us!

Kimi: "In the family we don´t speak so much and we also don´t phone all the time. Sure, when I am at home in Finland with my parentss and my older brother Rami, we talk about the normal things in life, but not about racing because everybody knows that this is one thing I don’t like to talk too much about, when I am off work."

RTL: Father a roadworker, mother Paula a small clerk, and little Kimi had big dreams at an early age:

Kimi: "I guess when I was 8 years old, I said to my mum:"Mum I am gonna be a world champion, but I don´t know in which kind of sport."

RTL: Kimi and cars, that only could become a career like this. For him, they gave up their last shirt, only had a privy, but instead of a new toilet, his cart was repaired first, because what is a toilet in comparison to a little, happy child:

Kimi: "As a child I was bored very fast with most things, I had to do something all the time and was wild at some things, but some are like this. Now in that time I came down more, but this is normal for everybody."

RTL: But he is still wild. A life between Vodka and wine. He likes breaking out privatly, and sometimes fell out of the frame, like in the comedy classic "Boat drop in the higher alcoholic content with a harpoon" as seen on YouTube:

Kimi: "No I haven´t changed anything, and will not change it. The people only leave me alone more, disturb me less, don´t write anymore so much about it. I lead my life on like this, it worked very good so far and the private stuff never influenced my performance. When I would realize that I am doing something wrong, I would change my attitude. I want to enjoy my life, as long as I can. You need something else than Motorsports in your life. I have great friends, a fantastic family and my wife, I have everything, so I enjoy my life, that´s the main thing."

RTL: The wild guy also has a soft side. Since 4 years he is married to model Jenni who has her own career in horse riding.

Kimi: "For sure I want to have children one day, but in Formula One you don´t have time, appointments all the time, so that´s probably not the right time now. If I have children I want to have much time for them, especially when they are small. For sure I wanna have kids when I am still young, but I still have many , many years, so one day it will come."

Hey Saima! Such a nice video! I undestand German so I watched without reading the translation; it´s so nice te hear Kimi talking about his family and what his relationship is like with them; also about having children and as you said it´ll be wonderful when he has a little Kimi (or a little Jenni) ;). And he comments on something that´s very important: his privacy. The way he leads his life, in that super private, calm way, which strikes some people as being cold, is the key for the way he is. By not talking so much and giving his usual "mono syllabic" answers, he has managed to achieve one of the things most famous and succcessful people crave the most: privacy and quiet. I think it´s remarkable. And having read a few comments made by Hamilton, you know, that he´s angry at the British press because they´re criticising him too much, he should take note on this: shut up, let your driving do the talking, even if it´s not always that good, and don´t get people´s hopes up by saying that you´re the best and that nothing can bring you down; because in the end he is human, he is bound to make mistakes and because he has been so forward with the press, he´s now being slammed by them.KEEP FLYING KIMI-KEEP FLYING EVENSTAR- FORZA  FERRARI!!!

Hi Sol!Glad you understood it properly then! 🙂 The giggles at the beginning were so cute lol and a baby Jenni! awww! whatever happens, I’ll be happy lolBut I’m feeling quite bad for Lewis, you know. F1Fanatic blog mention is attitude, so far, especially after last weekend. The media do make it harder for him, but he’s not handling it well I think. I’d be glad if Kimi could give him some advice lol Thank God Kimi knows where his respect and qualities lie, as you said, with privacy, peace and quiet. He’s a clever man, and such a good heart, bless him. He’s had his share of critics and heavy media coverage when at McLaren but he’s kept his point sharp clear the whole time. He doesn’t worry. Lewis needs to stop worrying, he’s letting the pressure get to him and he’s taking it personally when he really should just brush it off!

Thanks for the video. It’s a pity that ITV couldn’t see their way to do something similar on the current World Champion, but until they lose their fascination for Hamilton i guess there is no chance of it. Shame the Geman commentary is so loud, as you can tell their translation is not all of what Kimi had to say.I understand what you say about Lewis, the English press do have a habit of building someone up, only to knock them down faster. But he is not helping himself either, he really needs to get a decent manager and I’m surprised McLaren haven’t made him get one yet. Sure he has to have some amount of arrogance or he wouldn’t be in F1, but he really needs to learn some humility too before they really start to tear him to pieces.

Yeah, as much as it’s sweet and perhaps ‘correct’ that his father has been his manager all his life, for F1 though maybe he should suggest a second manager. Kimi has two! lol but they are father and son, and damn good at their job. They did really well to help Kimi get to F1.McLaren helped Lewis for most of his career though, so I’m a bit upset with them that they aren’t looking after him as well as they should be. Maybe it’s just Lewis himself, not wanting to back down with silly comments before and after races, but the way McLaren treated Kimi when he was there was completely the opposite. No wonder Kimi wasn’t happy there.
