…probably what you’d expect; enjoying time with family and friends, although there’s no monkeying around in boats this time! While the defeated two-time world champion Fernando Alonso receives a huge and comforting welcome in his Spanish home town Oviedo, the Finnish people are not so generous for their sporting hero. The Finns are known to be a very reserved people, we have this proof in Kimi himself, but it’s nice to know that Finnish F1 commentator Oskari Saari was fighting his tears back when Kimi crossed that finish line to become champion.
There isn’t any statue, event or celebration dedicated to Kimi in Finland. However considering how unloyal they have been in the past to him, I’m sure Kimi appreciates more the applause he received in Italy, the country of which he had to impress the most. Other than Kimi being seen as the David Beckham of the Scandinivian country, Finland aren’t too interested in giving Kimi his overdue acclaim.
What the Finnish press do like to know though, is Kimi’s whereabouts. Earlier this week Kimi was at the Levi ski resort in Finland, originally planning to see the alpine skiing event however it was cancelled a week ago. The Iceman felt happy in his cool surroundings and continued to stay at Levi, holding a party at a private cabinet including his own bartender and an officer to keep strangers and intruders at bay. Some people, though, were fortunate to get autographs from the reigning world champion.
On a more formal occassion, Kimi and Jenni are expected to attend Finland’s Independence Day celebrations on December 6th at the President’s castle. Riku Kuvaja, Kimi’s media consultant, says that although the couple haven’t received an invitation yet, Kimi may be able to fit the event into his schedule – he will get back to his F1 duties as testing resumes this month. After Finland’s Independance Day comes the FIA gala presentation, on December 7th in Monaco. So, it looks like Kimi has a tight schedule! Hopefully we will see him all presentable and sparkling for the first time, since being crowned as our world champion.
Jenni has been busy recently too, with the opening of her club Blak in Finland earlier in October. Here are some scans of a magazine photoshoot she appeared in:
Update – 5th December
Kimi will indeed be attending the Independance Day event with his wife, Italian newspapers report during the tests at Jerez this month.
