Kimi chasing ‘perfect’ Monza weekend
Kimi Raikkonen is targeting a ‘perfect weekend’at Monza after seeing his hopes of victory at the Turkish Grand Prix
ruined by a seemingly fairly innocuous mistake in qualifying.
Raikkonen ruined his hopes of pole position at Istanbul Park when
he made an error at the end of his flying lap during qualifying,
leaving him third on the grid. Although he was up to second by the
first corner, the Finn was never in a position to challenge team-mate
Felipe Massa.
However, Raikkonen claims he achieved his aim of closing down Lewis
Hamilton in the points, therefore making the weekend a success for him.
Even so, he wants Monza to be a ‘perfect weekend’ as he seeks a fourth
victory on home ground for the Ferrari team.
"Honestly, I thought reducing the gap by four points would have
been possible if everything had gone perfectly well. But that wasn’t
the case, in one way or the other the gap came down by four points.
That was the best thing at the weekend.
“If on Saturday all would have gone well, I could have caught the
pole. But after I had been beaten by my teammate I knew that my cards
had already been played. When you know when your teammate is going to
pit, there is hardly anything to do, above all if you are the one who
has to stop before him. Today’s Formula One is like that: Whoever is
ahead rules, especially when you have the same strategy.
"Monza is waiting for us; there we have to push to the maximum, as
ever. I think that Ferrari will also have a very competitive car there,
for the home race. For me it will be the first time in Monza as a
Ferrarista: I have to say that I really feel the difference to the
past, I’d also like to say that I’ve always had a very good
relationship with the Italian fans.
“It would be nice winning and celebrating together! It will be
tough. I know from experience that McLaren is very strong there. It
wasn’t by chance that they won the pole here last year. Having said
that, let’s go to Monza and win."
Let’s go and win, indeed Kimi! I think these quotes are taken from his official column however it is not released yet. But once it is, it shall be posted here as usual.
So, can the new Ferrarista win the all hearts of the Tifosi at Monza? His debut win at Australia did please them very much however a lot more needs to be done – in terms of winning the championship – though it’s good to hear Kimi speaking of Monza and the huge sea of Red that will be infront of him, watching every move. Scary!
