Kimi Raikkonen hopes to carry his excellent
start to the 2007 Formula One season into the Malaysian Grand Prix
after winning the opening race in Melbourne.
The Finn, making his debut as a Ferrari driver after replacing
Michael Schumacher last year, never looked like relinquishing his pole
position as he stormed to his 10th career victory on the Albert Park
Circuit.
And he is already planning his assault on Sepang in a week’s time.
"I will try to keep it up," he said. "But it is a completely
different circuit, different weather that usually makes it much more
difficult to get the car right because the tyres are not working as
well in the hot conditions.
After looking good throughout winter testing and continuing
their fine form into practice and qualifying this week, the result
perhaps came as no surprise.
Team-mate Felipe Massa also impressed as he stormed from last
place on the grid – where he began due to a 10-place penalty for
changing his engine – to finish sixth.
Raikkonen added: "I think we were expecting this, but we were
not 100% about what would happen and even today we did not have to push
100%, so we are in a good position.
"But in the next race it could be a completely different story
so we need to push and improve the whole package and go from there."
Kimi still faces the threat of having a 10-position grid penalty if his engine needs to be changed for the grand prix.
