The Canadian Grand Prix Weekend

Good day everyone,

A few inconveniences for myself as my internet security is currently unstable therefore unallowing me to upload my photos from the British Grand Prix or the Canadian Grand Prix 😦 But do not despair! I will be providing links to my photos externally, for the time being. Kimi arrives at Canada with a brand new engine whereas his teammate Juan Pablo has to finish his two race cycle with an old engine.

Sunday, Race

Comments below from the post race press conference. Fernando Alonso wins the eventful Canadian GP, with Michael Schumacher slipping into 2nd place and Kimi Raikkonen settling for 3rd.

Kimi, pushing Fernando in the early stages of the
race, but time lost in the pit stops.

Kimi Raikkonen:
Yeah. It wasn’t the easiest race. The car was pretty good to start with but
then at the first pit stop we had a problem with the clutch and when we put the
clutch in the wheels were still spinning so it took a long time for them to get
the rear wheel on and then at the second pit stop the car just stopped because
the clutch wasn’t working any more. I also lost second place to Michael on the
second last lap or something. I just got on the sand or whatever you call it.
The circuit was breaking up in a few places, so when I got on that there was
nothing I could do. It wasn’t ideal but anyhow we got some results and for me
it doesn’t really matter whether it’s second or third if we cannot win, so I
don’t really worry about it.

You appeared to be carrying more fuel in the second stint;
what affect did that have on the tyre wear in that situation down at the
hairpin?

KR: I don’t think that that was hurting any more than if we’d had a
little bit less fuel. The car was not maybe the easiest to drive but the
problem was more the circuit breaking up so that made it more difficult than
anything else.

Fastest lap of the race: Kimi Raikkonen – 1m15.841s (Lap 22)

In Thursday’s press conference at Montreal, Kimi was again asked about what he feels about the uncertainty of his future in F1.

“I think so, not 100 percent, but
for sure I will be in Formula 1 next year, so it’s not something I have
to worry about,” he said. “I’m happy how things are going and I will know at some point this year what’s there for me.”

Kimi, unlike Fernando Alonso who announced his future at McLaren before the season started, insists that he is just as focused on the 2006 season and wishes not to worry about making decisions.

“It’s
no worry,” he said. “I’m happy with what’s happening now and I don’t
really need to worry about next year or any other years.”

McLaren will have had Kimi’s services for 4 years, yet Kimi has not shown any resentment towards staying with the team: “I just have to wait some
time to see where we’re going with our team and then look at my
options".

So there you have it. Mr Raikkonen speaking no differently since when first asked about his future in January.

The Montreal track on an island has a spectacular view on the coasts, and all drivers enjoy the visit here. For Kimi, Montreal has been a place where he has shown some outstanding performances, from his debut year in Sauber claiming 4th place to his victory with McLaren last year. Kimi says: "The Canadian Grand Prix is defined by the long, high speed straights
that go into very slow corners. As a result, perhaps more so than at
other tracks, you need to have really good corner balance, so that you
can get on the power right away as you exit the turn. Otherwise you
would lose a huge amount of time on the straights. Because the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

is such a fast track, we will run with a very low downforce set-up. It
is also fairly low grip, as it is not severe on our Michelins we
traditionally use a softer compound, so find the grip through this. As
there are no high speed corners, there are no periods of high lateral
loadings on the tyres. Despite the speed, you do need to be quite
precise here, as it is part road circuit so the Armco are very close to
the edge of the track. It is also pretty dusty at the start of the
weekend, but as rubber is laid down it starts to clear on the racing
line. It was fantastic to win last year, and we had a solid weekend at
the last race in Silverstone
, hopefully we can put in another good result this weekend."

A poem I just wrote about Kimi Raikkonen, from the top of my head, and heart lol :

The Iceman cometh,
Over the seas
To fly through each corner,
As he will never cease.

Alone he walks,
Alone he runs,
Alone he falls,
Alone is he as one.

Kimi Raikkonen is his true name,
A whisper in the wind
As he flys by,
His fire burns within.
