A new season is about to start within a couple of weeks and bookmakers are already judging who are the contenders for the next season and predictions for point makers. Kimi Raikkonen is one of these contenders but before his new season will commence, he had spoken out shortly about his 2007 experience.
“For sure, we were not in the strongest position at some points of the world championship season, but we always believed that we could recover, than we could do a better job that the other teams. And even in the hard times, everybody at Ferrari was sticking together and we didn’t give up.
“It was good because as we saw in the end that even from a long way behind we could reduce the gap and go ahead and win the World Championship, not just the constructors’ championship but also the drivers’, and I need to thank the team as they did a really great job all year.
“We had some hard times when we suffered some reliability problems and we lost quite a lot of points. At one point, people were saying that we weren’t in the championship anymore, but we showed them tat they were wrong. We were able to come back and we came back strongly in the end and it was great teamwork from all the people, from Felipe and the guys on the team, so it was a great season.
“Like I said, we had some hard times with some problems, but we were always working hard to improve the situation and I think we had perfect teamwork, with Felipe helping all the time also. We had a hard fight with him all year, but then he unfortunately did not score and could not be in the fight anymore, so he’s been a big help also. The sponsors have been a big bonus as well. The team is very close to them and they have been doing a great job for us, improving the fuel and everything to help us with the new regulations.
I came from pretty much nothing, but the family put in a lot of effort always, our friends, and our cousins and all the sponsors in the beginning helped us to get here, but it was a long time ago. I’ve had great people behind me, great managers to help me here and the teams that I’ve driven for have got close to the championship a few times but I have never been able to be there at the right moment. “
Those were Kimi’s few words about his experience of the 2007 season in his own eyes. A Few facts of his career till the end of the 2007 season:
GP’s – 122
Wins – 15
Poles – 14
Fastest Laps – 25
Points – 456
After 2 close calls to the title in 2003 and 2005, Kimi Raikkonen at last won the 2007 championship, a well deserved merit. Bookmakers are already favouring Kimi as a contender of the next championship.
~ Thanks Steven! While the Iceman is hard at work developing the F2008 in the tests, recalling his thoughts on winning an F1 world title is refreshing and it reminds us that it was extremely hard for him. He’ll certainly be more comfortable with the car this year and maybe he can spread his wings properly and fly to a second title. Cheers to that!
