Kimi’s Triumph a Relief – Mosely

Mosley relieved Kimi triumphed

FIA president Max Mosley has admitted he was relieved to see Kimi Raikkonen win the 2007 Formula 1 World Championship title.

Mosley conceded that if the Ferrari man had have beaten to the crown by either of McLaren’s drivers – Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso – there would have been a question mark over the validity of their triumph.

McLaren’s racers were allowed to continue fighting for the drivers’ title, despite the team having their constructors’ championship points deleted as a result of the spying row with Ferrari.

"Relieved because, if it had been either of the two McLaren drivers, there would always have been a question mark," Mosley told The Guardian. "I’m not sure how big a question mark but it would have been there. And that puts you in an incredibly difficult position. I think we’ve been very lucky."

The FIA boss also suggested the whole spying saga could have actually increased interest in the sport, rather than damaging it’s popularity.

"People are interested in the human aspect and the whole human aspect of the Ferrari-McLaren thing fascinated a lot of people outside Formula One," he continued. "The publicity actually increases interest.

"So I don’t think it does any harm to Formula One as long as the sponsors and so on feel the sport is honestly run and honestly governed."

Okay…so the boss of F1 is relieved Kimi won the championship based on the assumption that the end result is fair and 100% justified to the McLaren/Ferrari Spy Saga? I’d be more concerned if the driver who won the most races, who never bad mouthed anyone or anything and who kept his focus spot on had not won the title, putting aside who won more in the courts. The points scoring system needs to be seriously considered, otherwise we’ll continue seeing drivers constantly thinking about the points they are getting and not the race win which is what racing should be all about! Thank God that Kimi won, the man who takes all or nothing and is undoubtedly a true Champion of Formula One.
