Post-race press conference – Read the podium finishers’ thoughts here
One word sums up this race: CHAOS. The word was written all over the track today, with endless incidents and accidents, and my prediction of at least 5 safety car calls was correct. All the attention is on Lewis Hamilton, though, as he won his first ever Formula One Grand Prix in only his 6th race. However, the biggest concern of the race was the horrible 170mph car crash of BMW’s Robert Kubica, though currently in stable condition, he suffered a broken leg. Lewis Hamilton controlled from lap 1 this bizarre yet typical race of Montreal, full of unpredicted occurances and drama. Picture below of the crash:
Kimi had a poor race yet again unfortunatly, losing a place to Massa after the first corner on lap 1. His race continued in a very lacklustre performance and he finished, thank God, in 5th place. Massa was black flagged as was Renault’s Fisichella due to exiting the pit lane under a red light, whereas others such as Kubica had waited for green.
The biggest loser of the race has to be Fernando Alonso. That’s not a criticism, but given the huge mistake on turn 2, he fell back into 3rd place after cutting over the grass, missing impact with Heidfeld. Since then, it was madness for Alonso as he made two more mistakes and let Massa past, trying to claw his way back into Lewis’ now massive lead of 12 seconds.
There is obviously too much to say here so please enjoy the Autosport.com race report.
Now, here’s my unedited-straight from the heart- thoughts: As I said, complete CHAOS this Canadian Grand Prix was, and I really enjoyed it as I’m sure most people watching did too. I had a huge fright though when Kubica crashed, it’s like a nightmare seeing something as brutal and horrible as his crash was, and the image of him completely shaken inside the cockpit left me gobsmacked! I was almost in tears at the sight. I was so relieved and thankful that he was okay and taken to the medics’ who comfirmed he was stable. He has a broken leg however, and with Indianopolis just next weekend, he won’t be able to race, definatly not.
I’m really frustrated with Kimi’s performance yet again. I’m sure he must be too. I spent a total of 15 minutes shouting at the tv and Kimi to push harder! Do something! Come on! But nothing. Kimi obviously just wanted to finish this race, and that he actually did finish it amidst the madness and drama going on around him, I’m grateful!
I think it’s funny though, that the amount of times Alonso was actually bothering to try to do something and race someone, he still didn’t even get on the podium! So, in that respect, maybe we should be thanking Kimi for not bothering to do anything this time…hehehe. At least he didn’t get completely owned by a Super Aguri of Sato! Takuma shamed Ralf Schumacher by pulling a clean and sweet move on his Toyota, and then had a crack at Alonso’s McLaren Mercedes! Oh my goodness, I had such a good time watching this race towards the end, it was quite funny and dramatic. Sato did an excellent job today, and he finished just behind Kimi in 6th place. He was on a roll. I was even betting that he might catch up to Kimi and put him to shame as well. But thankfully, we were saved from another nightmare. I guess he had some luck; Massa was blackflagged and had to retire…but other than that, Kimi just didn’t drive like the driver I’ve been supporting for 4 years now, but the Ferrari car was still way off pace from the McLaren’s as Alonso was taking a 1.4 seconds out of Kimi when he was behind and almost got past him. But it seems even Alonso gave up and had to settle to just finish this strange race. Yesterday though, Kimi spoke to MTV3 Finland regarding the huge qualifying gap to the McLarens: “I couldn’t go any faster with that fuel load”.
The two different drivers on podium for the first time this season, in a BMW and Williams, were Heidfeld and Wurz and they deserved it, they hardly made any mistakes. Heikki Kovalainen has to be the driver who gained most out of this race, he finished ahead of Kimi in 4th place after starting dead last! I bet that’s made him smile after such a tough weekend.
Lewis, though, really seems to have an effect on Alonso’s mentality and confidence. Hamilton was flawless today and drove the McLaren beautifully in such an eventful race. What a great maiden F1 victory! I dare not look at any british F1 sites and newspapers though, my stomach is still hurting from laughing so hard at ITV’s crew.
I guess we, Kimi fans, can only pray for our Finn’s future. It’s not looking good at all. Perhaps I’m exagerrating, because this was a crazy race and not right to draw such conclusions…but I can tell just from his performance; he is not happy with his car at all and it reflects in his driving. If Kimi isn’t happy, then I’m afraid I’m not either.
Alas, today is over, and a new race begins in 7 days at Indianapolis. Let’s never turn our back on Kimi and continue to stand by him, through THICK AND THIN! Keep Flying Kimi! (I should start saying Keep Coasting Kimi for now actually…LOL!)
Post-Race Ferrari quotes and comments:
Kimi Raikkonen:
"It was a very difficult race for me, right from the beginning. I did
not have much grip at the start, being on the dirty side of the track
and immediately after, I hit Felipe’s car with my front wing. Then,
there were so many safety car periods that it caused chaos. On top of
that, after Kubica’s accident, a piece of debris got stuck in my front
wing and I had so much understeer and some difficulties with the
brakes. All these problems put together made this a really complicated
race. At the end of the day, I picked up some points: it could have
been better but it could also have been worse."
