HUNGARY GP – RACE RESULTS

This Is For You Jules – A 69 lap charge around the Hungaroring ended in a win for Sebastian Vettel. The German took the lead right after the start, with a forceful move on the Mercedes duo of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Vettel saw his 30 second advantage wiped out when the Safety Car came out on lap 42. Seb kept his concentration, doing a good job of managing the final third of the race, to take the chequered flag in first place for his second win with Ferrari, his first ever in Hungary.

Kimi Raikkonen was very unlucky today. The Finn was lying second for much of the race, thanks to a great start and a determined overtaking move on Rosberg under braking for Turn 2. Kimi was right behind his team-mate for two thirds of the race, but his chance of a podium evaporated on lap 56 when a problem with his energy recovery system meant he had to retire.

From formulaspy.com – Kimi: “It would’ve been good for the team to be one and two because we had the speed but we had the problem with the car, we hit the maximum that we could today. I could hear some things change, but for me it was just a sudden loss of power. It was surprisingly okay after the safety car, in the straight lines we were slow but no losing so much. But because we had one problem, there came another, we tried to sort it out but we couldn’t do the whole race like that. I think I have had so many disappointments and bad races, that this is just one more.”

From autosport.com – Kimi:  “We’ve had bad races, that is one more. Obviously it would have been much greater for the team to have a one-two, but as a team we still won with Seb so it is good for the team. It was a pain for us not to be one and two because we easily had the speed and everything was there, we just got done by a problem with the car. Unfortunately that’s part of the luck for us and part of the business and part of the racing and there is nothing we could do. The car went wrong but we did the maximum level we could at the end of the day. When you look at the end result it’s not such a great thing but it looks far away from the disaster of last year. We’ve had all the issues and problems and now we keep pushing and hopefully we get a little bit of luck. We showed that we can do a great result, great races, but we just have to make sure we don’t have any issues in part of the weekend.”

From autosport.com – Kimi: “We had good speed and we pulled away from them, not easily, but we were consistently faster than them. I don’t know what would have happened if we were behind them, probably we couldn’t have used our own speed because it is hard to overtake. There have been many times this year when we feel we had more speed than we have been able to show because we were stuck behind another car and not been able to overtake. So the benefit of making good starts made a big difference and it was nice to have a good start with both cars because it hasn’t been our strongest point this year. It shows that we are doing things right and that the car is not too bad.”

From ferrarif1.com – Kimi: “It’s a shame what happened today in the race, but when you have no luck you have no luck, we did our best today. The start was really good for both of us, probably the best since the beginning of the season; we had good speed and were able to pull away and stay in front. The speed was always there today and I was expecting to push right to the end, but at one point I heard something strange in the car, the sound was getting different and then got worse and worse. We tried to fix it but it was not possible so I decided to retire. As a team we had a pretty good day with Sebastian’s win, but I think that we deserved a better result today, more than just a win. Without my problem we could have got a one-two finish very easily but things seem to always go in the worst possible way. Overall in the first part of the season we had the speed but it has been a bit unlucky. There was always something dictating the final result of the race quite badly. The most important thing now is to get rid of all the problems, we’ll keep pushing and hopefully luck will turn on our side and we’ll get what we deserve.”

From motorsport.com – Kimi: When asked if it was fair that he lost a result that could have swung his future, through no fault of his own, Raikkonen said: “It is not a question of being fair or not. It is not my decision, it is up to them. They do what they want. Obviously it is disappointing. I have had disappointments last year and this year, and I am sure this year we have had pretty good speed all the time. We just keep having issues here and there, and mistakes here and there, and we have struggled to show the real results because of those. But if I did not have the speed I would not be here. I would stop if I didn’t feel I had the speed or the passion. I would not come here, I would stay home.” Although Raikkonen has not been able to deliver the results he believes he is capable of, he thinks the team appreciates how different the situation is to 12 months ago when he was struggling. “When you only see the end result it does not look like a great thing but we have been far away from disaster like last year – even with problems and mistakes. We will keep pushing and hopefully we can put our bad luck behind us. I am sure we can get great results and great races, but we have to make sure that we don’t have many issues and any problems with it. It is a big key point for us, we know we have to improve – but things go wrong sometimes. When it goes wrong with us, with the car or with me, it is just the end result is not good. It is part of the game, an unfortunate thing, and not a nice thing to have, but what can you do? You just have to keep trying and pushing and I am sure we can have good results this year. Who knows what happens next year? It is not in my hands really. It is in the team’s and that is it.”

Ferrari Chairman Sergio Marchionne – “We dedicate this victory to the memory of Jules Bianchi, a fantastic guy whom we all miss terribly. Unfortunately, today in the end, we were unable to celebrate a one-two finish which was within our grasp because of a problem with Kimi’s car. That’s a clear sign we must never drop our guard. We will continue to work on closing the gap to those ahead of us, but without ever ignoring the reliability factor. We will soon be pausing for the summer break, after which I’m sure everyone in the Scuderia will return even more ready and determined than ever.”

Maurizio Arrivabene -“A fantastic win! Over the past few weeks, we had had comments from people who said we were in a slump, people who obviously can’t or don’t want to read the numbers. As a matter of fact, we had anticipated long time ago that there could be ups and down in the course of the season, but that does not mean that we were stepping back. This weekend started with a horrible Friday for us, so we knew we only had P3 on Saturday to properly set the car up. We calmed down and managed to recover, but still we didn’t know we could win the race. We were only confident that we could fight at the front. Then both Seb and Kimi had a tremendous start and being able to drive in clean air surely made a difference in terms of tyre management, as we knew the first two sets of Options would perform very well. I am very disappointed, though, that Kimi din not make it to the end, because he was having a great day. Congrats to him. This is Formula One and we must accept the lack of reliability as another challenge for the future. We won today, but still keep our feet on the ground and remain humble and committed”.

Sebastian Vettel – “I think it looked pretty promising off the line. Obviously it was a great move from Kimi. Obviously he started another row back and we managed to be one-two after the first couple of corners. So I guess he did a hell of a job to get these Mercedes in the first two corners. Yeah, then I was told during the safety car phase that he has a problem with the car. He lost the [MGU]-K and obviously then you’re pretty chanceless, you lose a lot of power and then all the systems start to misbehave, so in the end he didn’t finish. It’s a shame – because I think it could have been, first of all, a very, very strong team result and second, a one-two. A great day for Ferrari but not as great as it could have been. Obviously a bit of a shame for Kimi – it’s not my job but all the bullshit that’s been going around recently, I think both of us were driving a very consistent race and deserved a one-two.”
