Hmmm, it does look closer than we thought, but we still do not know whether McLaren will be going light in qualifying as these times suggest. All the best to the Iceman. Keep Flying Kimi!

Ferrari drivers predicts strong weekend:

Kimi said he was happy with his morning session but less so
with his work in the afternoon, when he didn’t feel totally comfortable
with his car.

"I am reasonably happy with the way things went in the morning and a
bit less so when it came to the afternoon," said the Finn. "For some
reason, probably a change in the wind direction, conditions were rather
difficult and we will have to evaluate very carefully the data from the
second session because it is easy to go down the wrong route.

"As for the two types of tyre, from what we have seen today, both
work well but we will have to wait to do a more complete evaluation
tomorrow. We have a good package which we must try and get the most out
of."

So, we can tell Kimi is already quite fond of the Istanbul Park Circuit despite struggling a bit with car balance and grip, yet he managed to stay in the top 2! Looking forward to qualifying tomorrow, it’s going to be a close one. Can Massa do anything to get pole in the Ferrari driver’s desperate bid to take the teams support for the title? Or will Kimi have this one in the bag?

Practice 1

Kimi Räikkönen; Ferrari; Istanbul Park Kimi Räikkönen; Ferrari; Istanbul Park

Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari dominated the first Friday practice session at Istanbul Park.

The Finn was the first major contender to emerge from the pits after
a very quiet start to the session on the dusty track. He immediately
went fastest and eventually improved to a 1:28.019 lap that put him
eight tenths clear of the field.

Raikkonen then gained another tenth on his final run and achieved a 1:27.988.

While his teammate Felipe Massa steadily closed in before ending the
session 0.403 seconds behind Raikkonen, the McLarens had no answer.

Fernando Alonso was as low as seventh for much of the morning, and
although he ultimately took third, he was 1.2 seconds slower than
Raikkonen.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton ended up in fourth place, but only completed 10 laps before his McLaren developed a slipping clutch and had to spend the rest of the session in the garage. The car will be repaired for the second session, however.

22. Yamamoto Spyker-Ferrari (B) 1:32.270 + 4.282 35

Yay! Great start from Kimi, and it’s also good to see Massa close by. I don’t think the McLaren’s are really that behind, but they can’t be conserving their revs because the engines they use on Friday’s are independant from the rest of the weekend, but look at BMW –  they are also quite a far bit behind. Toyota and Renault are coming forward too.
